SUMMER HOURS / CLOSINGS!
Last bit of spam for the day:
OUR SUMMER HOURS WILL BE 1PM TO 6PM, MONDAY TO FRIDAY.

GSNC gets some signage (finally)
It’s been a long time coming, but the Grant Street Neighborhood Center is officially no longer “that old library on Grant Street”! How’s that?
With help from Utzig Signs (up on Niagara St in Blackrock), we got a sign! Check it out, it’s very nice.
Refugee Project comes to GSNC!
This past Friday, June 25th, we had the advanced theatre class from Nichols School perform their original play, Refugee Project: Unheard Voices from a Hidden Population. About fifty people came out to see this moving piece, which drew upon interviews of refugees and immigrants who have resettled in Buffalo, as well as a deacon who has dedicated much of his time to helping refugees and...

Sorry for those who have occasionally clicked that link in my email footers, or have this page bookmarked and was bored one day at work, or for any youth who found their way to this page from the Computer Rules pop-up. We are here and we exist!

New rule!!!
(A real update will be coming.)
We have a new computer rule in effect, and I will update the Computer Rules to be more clear on what is and isn’t allowed. The new rule is: No Myspace unless you are 13 or older.
Myspace already requires that you are 13 or older in order to sign up, so anyone younger than 13 should not even have an account. I am not naive to the allure of Myspace, but I...

Movie Night update
It’s been awhile … things have been rolling along here as usual. We will be coming up with a more comprehensive program plan, especially when the summer comes. Recently, we’ve had a professional artist/art teacher run a discussion-based paint session as well as help from Capoiera Mandinga Buffalo to run a youth class!
Don’t forget, Movie Nights are always on Friday! ...
Library News is always Good News
1. I swear this server will be set up soon, which means we are getting close to being able to catalog all the books.
2. Once we do, you can actually browse the books on the computer, find books, check books out … it will be beautiful.
In the meantime, here are some photos.
Also, our wonderful friends at Talking Leaves (on Elmwood) have graciously donated a beautiful atlas to our...

Buffalo Jills at the Center!
Four Buffalo Jills stopped by last Thursday as part of Girl Talk. We had a great time learning more about what it’s like to be a cheerleader for an NFL team, as well as their job as a role model for the many girls that look up to them. Thanks Gabby, Ruby, Kristen, and Alyssa!
Here’s a photo of them with some of the PUSH team upstairs:
Feb 10th press conference

Girl Talk 2010
In Fall 2009, the Center had introduced a teen girl program called Girl Talk that ran semi-informally. For Spring 2010, we’ve got big plans coming, with a bit of program re-tooling.
WHAT IS GIRL TALK / Girl Talk is a teen girls group that gives a space to talk about the different issues we face every day and to find constructive ways to deal with them. We strive to make connections,...

Not quite 9,000 but The Grant Street Neighborhood Center officially hit 100 members today! We’re officially at 102 members, with membership only starting since January 4th, so this is awesome.

The books are flowing in!
As promised for quite awhile now, we are in the process of turning the old Northwest District Library back into a functioning independent community-based library.
We are working with University of Buffalo’s Department of Library and Information Studies to weed, organize, and build upon our collection, as well as bring more library-related resources to the Center.
We are purchasing books...
MLK day of service at the Center!
Thanks to some forty volunteers from Youth Leaders of Erie County, we’ve had a bit of a (to use the most overused term in Buffalo history) makeover here at the Center! We’ve painted over all the walls with a lovely white and we’ve completed half of the wall mural/design. It looks great in here.
We will be back to regular hours tomorrow (Tues Jan 19th), so stop by, check it...
